Industry 4.0 transformation of a FMCG giant
In the fast-paced consumer goods (FMCG) industry, operational efficiency, cost savings, and safety standards are of utmost importance. An FMCG giant, a global frontrunner in this sector, acknowledged the necessity to optimize its operations to maintain a leading position in a fiercely competitive market. Teaming up with Portera, the client commenced on a power app transformation journey harnessing the capabilities of Microsoft Power Apps.
The client encountered many challenges in its on-site operations, ranging from errors in manual data entry to unwieldy and inefficient paper-based workflows. These inefficiencies resulted in decision-making delays, a lack of real-time insight into processes, and escalated safety concerns through inaccurate or missing data.
Acknowledging the pressing need for transformation, the client embarked on a direct solution to tackle these issues and drive operational excellence. For this challenge, Portera in partnership with Microsoft, proposed Industry 4.0 power apps.
Power Apps, part of Microsoft’s suite of low-code development tools, enables rapid creation and deployment of custom applications without extensive coding. Integrated with other Office 365 tools and Azure functions, it offers automation of workflows, business application development, data analysis, and AI chatbot creation.
Particularly beneficial for manufacturing companies facing challenges like inflation and supply/demand issues, Power Apps aid in automating manual processes, reducing errors, and driving digital transformation at a lower cost compared to traditional methods.
Power Apps offers three development types—canvas apps, model-driven apps, and portals—allowing flexibility to cater to various manufacturing needs. For instance, in the chemical industry, Power Apps’ predictive algorithms can analyze complex data, predict outcomes, and optimize experimental conditions with minimal human intervention. Choosing the most suitable app type depends on factors like manufacturing focus, equipment, and specific challenges faced by each company.
Portera assembled a cross-functional team comprising IT professionals, manufacturing process experts from across the business, and end-users to understand the unique requirements for this solution. Together, they identified key areas for improvement and developed a comprehensive strategy to leverage the capabilities, including the targeted use of Microsoft Power Apps.
The result was the creation of a suite of customized Power Apps tailored to the client’s specific needs. Top of the prioritization list included:
Across People, Processes, and Platforms, the implementation of Power Apps brought about tangible improvements across the client’s operations:
Through collaboration and innovation, the client and Portera have transformed operational practices in this FMCG giant. By harnessing the power of Microsoft Power Apps, Portera has not only increased efficiency and cost savings but also elevated safety standards across its client’s operations. As our client continues its digital journey, we stand together to lead the industry with a commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.
