Data-Driven Sailing with Sailing Innovation Centre (SIC)

Transforming Dutch National Sailor's Performance with Advanced Data Insights

The headline

In elite sports, data is revolutionizing performance, and sailing leads the charge with our partnership with The Sailing Innovation Centre in The Hague. By leveraging advanced data analytics, we’re transforming how sailing teams train and compete, enabling athletes to make smarter decisions and set new performance benchmarks. This approach aims to provide actionable insights that enhance Dutch sailing tactics, offering sailors a deeper understanding of conditions and performance trends to optimize their strategies with data and gain a competitive edge.

The challenge

For many elite sailors, including Olympic bronze medalist Annemiek Bekkering, improving tactical performance outside of the water is a major challenge. While sailors can dedicate time to mental and physical fitness, limited tools are available to analyze race dynamics, study competitor strategies, or experiment with tactics outside of active water training. This gap between on-water practice and off-water preparation limits the potential for further improvement and hinders sailors from reaching their full competitive potential.

The solution

Project Neptune is an advanced collaboration focused on boosting sailing performance through data analytics, AI, and modeling. It features a sophisticated dashboard integrating wind speed, water conditions, boat speed, and competitor data into a user-friendly interface. By leveraging data from SAP Sailing Analytics API and SAP Sailing web interfaces, the project provides comprehensive performance reporting, allowing sailors to review past races, simulate strategies, and gain deep insights into race elements like start line positions, speed, and maneuvers. For the first time, sailors gain a clear, precise understanding of their performance and strategies, revolutionizing their approach to racing.

The result

  • Annette Duetz & Odile van Aanholt, Team Portera sailors, won the World Championship 2024.
  • Annette Duetz & Odile van Aanholt secured the gold medal in the 49er FX at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
  • Bart Lambriex & Floris van de Werken, Team Portera sailors, earned silver at the World Championship and 6th place at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the 49er.
  • The project received the International Business Award (Stevie Award) in 2024.
  • Sailors gained unprecedented clarity and precision in performance assessment and strategy refinement.

“ When you are racing, you rely on feelings and emotions. When things go well or they don’t go well, it’s quite easy to get stuck in your mind. Together with Portera, we try to take the data and see where it has actually been going well, or where it has been going wrong. Thanks to these data analytics we are able to help validate feelings based on the facts, based on the data”.
